Sunny Days Ahead for the First Family
There is nothing quite like the excitement a new puppy can bring to a house...especially when that house happens to be the most famous house of all: The White House.
On August 19, the Obama family welcomed Sunny, a 1-year-old Portuguese Water Dog born in Michigan in June 2012. She joins Bo, also a Portuguese Water Dog, who was given as a gift to the Obama family by the late Senator Edward Kennedy. The "hypoallergenic" breed was chosen by the President and First Lady because their younger daughter Malia is allergic to pet dander. This breed and others considered hypoallergenic, such as poodles and Bichon Frise, do not shed and produce less dander.
Vice Dog of the United States (VDOTUS)
No official word on how the "DOTUS" (Dog of the United States) is handling his new big brother duties, but photos and a video on the White House website show the two dogs frolicking happily together. Sunny is expected to join Bo (and the Obamas) on his "official" duties, which include visiting Walter Reed and the Children's National Medical Center, inspecting the White House holiday decorations, and greeting guests at the White House on tours and during the Easter Egg Roll.
Sunny is described on the White House blog as "full of energy and very affectionate." And at 1 year old, is most assuredly housebroken
