First Pop-Up Dog Park Launched by PetSmart in Phoenix
Phoenix is about to be home to the nation's first pop-up dog park. The "park," which will actually be in a repurposed 20 by 8 foot metal shipping container, will include toys, lighting, several surface areas, and clean up stations. The park will be built by PetSmart and maintained by the City of Phoenix. The pop up dog park concept was spurred by Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton's initiative to fill the city's many vacant lots.
"Since we're headquartered in Phoenix, we really wanted to bring this concept here," said Andy Izquierdo, PetSmart's vice president of corporate affairs. "We think the pop-up dog park is such an innovative use of that vacant land [and] we thought it could really add something special to the community." Izquierdo added that if the pop-up dog park is well received, more may follow. "This is definitely something we hope to take to other communities," he said.
