After voluntary recalls prompted by reports of pet illness and death, two brands are preparing to return new jerky treats to the market. The brands, Milo's Kitchen and Nestle, both say they have taken steps to ensure the new treats are safe. Nestle, who manufactures Waggin' Train treats, will use a single manufacturer in China, while Milo's Kitchen will be sourced and manufactured within the United States.

The new products will also add serving size recommendations on the packaging, but some veterinarians say those guidelines are misleading. Tony Buffington, DVM, MS, PhD at the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, cautions against feeding the jerky treats or any other type of snacks to dogs. "I am a huge fan of treats, which are things that bring pets joy. I am not a fan of snacks because it risks weight gain and teaches pets to beg," he said.
